History of the Michelada

Sure, it’s easy to believe that one night in a quiet hotel bar, a most interesting cerveza had a saucy time with one spicy tomato, word has it they’ve been on again, off again ever since – but what really happened? To hear the beer talk, there are three possibilities:

The “Mitchelada” Story

Savants and trivialists recall the Mitchel family, originally from France, held regular family parties in their hometown of Jalisco, Mexico. Mitchelada became the name of the parties and michelada, all limey and peppery, became the name of the favorite drink.  It has been acknowledged in Mexico and France as the best hangover cure. The hair of the Chihuahua that bit you, if you will!

The General “Michelada” Story

General Augusto Michel hailed from San Luis Potosí in Central Mexico and fought in the Mexican Revolution. He may be most famous for enjoying an unusual drink at the local watering hole: beer mixed with spicy sauces and lemon juice. The drink was named the michelada in his honor. It seems that the General really knew how to viva la vida!

The “Mi Chela Helada” Story

Si no comprendes, here’s a quick lesson in Mexican Spanish slang -michelada can be broken down into three components mi chela helada, which literally translates to English as “my ice-cold beer.” Can’t think of how these three words might get slurred together…

The truth is we don’t really know, nor do we really care who invented the Michelada, we’re just really jazzed that it exists and now we bring it to you! Don’t let anyone trick you with Bloody Mary mix (that stuff is totally made for vodka). Choose your favorite flavor of Más Sabrosa and let the world know “Michelada me!”
